Microsoft Virtual Academy & Visual Basic Fundamentals

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Learning Journey, My Goals

I have been taking this free course from Microsoft Virtual Academy on Visual Basic Fundamentals. The best part? It’s free! The next best part? The quality is awesome. There are no shortcuts or sloppy explanations.   Visual Basic Fundamentals The course gives an overview of Visual Studio 2015, and makes it quite easy to understand for people who have never written a single line of code in their life (that’s me). There are some parts where the lecturer Bob Tabor goes over very quickly, but a little bit of extra effort to re-watch the video or do some research on Google […]

Center Stage《阮玲玉》 (1992) – Theme Song Music Video

Center Stage (《阮玲玉》)is a movie released in 1992. Directed by Stanley Kwan, starring Maggie Cheung as 1930s actress Ruan Lingyu, Tony Leung Kar-fai, Ng Kei Wah, Chin Han, Carina Lau and Cecilia Yip. It was one of my favourite movies in the 1990s. I remember when it was shown on TV, it was in the late night and my family were all asleep. I stayed up to watch and was mesmerized by the cast's performance. The story of Ruan Lingyu was also very intriguing and sad. She passed away at the age of 24 by suicide after incessant harassment by [...]

Can You Write A Program? The Need for Visual Basic in the Office

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Learning Journey, Personal Life

Can you write a program? Is a question I get from my colleagues quite often. I guess if they are asking this, there could be two possibilities: there is a need for someone who can write a program, or I look like someone who can. There are so many blog posts out there about how a little bit of programming can lead to a major productivity boost. Use Python! Or JavaScript! Put it here, put it there, and you will shave hours off your work! It really sounds fantastic. Sure, a few simple lines of code may do a lot […]

Imagine What You Can Do In a Year: My Front End Web Development Journey

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Front End Web Development, Learning Journey, My Goals, Personal Life

A couple of days ago I read a blog post from Treehouse titled “Imagine What You Can Do In a Year” about a Treehouse student Ms. Ashley Harpp. It was a motivating read and an apt reminder that we can accomplish a lot by doing a little every day. My biggest problem is always trying to get to the end point quickly, then losing momentum either through loss of interest, or giving up after hitting an obstacle. Or getting overwhelmed with other life events, and then not picking up that initial goal again after the busy period is over. Or getting distracted […]

Front End Web Development with Team Treehouse

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Front End Web Development, Learning Journey, My Goals, Personal Life

Yesterday I subscribed to Team Treehouse (again) for their course on Front End Web Development. It is a basic subscription at about $25 USD a month. Had tried the Python course before, but it was a little too dry for me. After all, I have no programming experience, and I needed to visualize what I can do with the stuff that I’m learning. So my interest in Python sort of waned after going through a few exercises. Anyway, web development is different. At least, after putting in some HTML, I can see something appearing before my eyes, which is interesting. […], Brigitte’s old movies and Mumblings, 19/9/2016

For the past couple of days I didn't put anything up. There was a public holiday, and I made full use of the long weekend to settle other personal stuff. I should've done those a long time ago, but kinda held them back due to my excitement about this site. Also I finally got past the crazy questions in order to sign up as a Level 1 member of It is a strange Chinese video sharing website that is dominated by anime and vocaloid stuff (what do you call this sub-culture?). But there are no shortages of good quality Brigitte [...]

Site Update 15/9/2016

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Brigitte Lin Related, Change Log, Personal Life

It’s been almost a week since my last update. Mostly I have been putting up drafts of sections under another main section, wherever inspiration hits me. Now the main page is up, and so are the following sections: About Brigitte Lin About this site My Blog (obviously) Main Page for Movies Sub page for 1992 to 1994 films Sometimes I thought I could fly through with the contents, but actually finding suitable pictures, editing them, compiling them, putting them up, adjusting, etc. could actually take a whole night. I think after I set up the sub pages for Brigitte’s films […]

Disclaimer: NONE of the links here are affiliate links. They are just, y’ know, plain links. I’m writing based on my experiences setting up this site, and not promoting or putting down anyone’s services. Previously I fleshed out the structure of my site, did a video background for my landing page and set a static front page. That took me a whole week to figure out. Now I’m moving on to actually putting in content and styling my pages. I’m sure that would be more fun to do. As mentioned previously, my page composer of choice is Visual Composer by […]
