The Bride with White Hair (1993) - Brigitte Lin

Update: The Bride with White Hair (1993) | 白髮魔女傳

The Bride with White Hair (1993) is a high-fantasy wuxia film, directed by Ronny Yu, and starring Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung. I remember watching this movie at home, on VHS with my family, after becoming a huge fan of Brigitte Lin. I remember being absolutely disappointed because I had no idea what was going on, thanks to the heavy censorship on the film (yep, most of Brigitte and Leslie’s scenes in the water? Gore? All gone). Now that I got to watch it 23 years later, I realized how beautiful the film was, and how masterfully Brigitte and Leslie […]

Update: Handsome Siblings (1992) 絕代雙驕 Movie Page

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Brigitte Lin Related, Change Log

Short update: The page for Handsome Siblings (1992) is finally up. I have fond memories of this movie. It isn’t as well-recognized as the other Brigitte Lin wuxia classics, such as Swordsman II, New Dragon Gate Inn, The Bride with White Hair and Ashes of Time, mainly because it is peppered with too many low-level jokes. However, Brigitte is stunning as More, and Andy Lau shows off his funny, charismatic side. Ng Man Tat and Deanie Ip have great chemistry on screen, and Francis Ng gives an outstanding performance as the cowardly but evil Kong Yuk-long. I used to watch […]

Finally, I got the page for Secret Love for Peach Blossom Spring up and running. Please check the link here. After I am done with Handsome Siblings, my Brigitte Lin 1992 collection will be complete! Then I will move on to 1993, and 1994. That’s another 12 movies to go for the 90s…but I will get it done!

Microsoft Virtual Academy

Microsoft Virtual Academy & Visual Basic Fundamentals

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Learning Journey, My Goals

I have been taking this free course from Microsoft Virtual Academy on Visual Basic Fundamentals. The best part? It’s free! The next best part? The quality is awesome. There are no shortcuts or sloppy explanations.   Visual Basic Fundamentals The course gives an overview of Visual Studio 2015, and makes it quite easy to understand for people who have never written a single line of code in their life (that’s me). There are some parts where the lecturer Bob Tabor goes over very quickly, but a little bit of extra effort to re-watch the video or do some research on Google […]

Portrait of Lin Ching Hsia

A Portrait of Lin Ching Hsia | 亞視林青霞寫真 (1991)

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Brigitte Lin Related, My Creations
A couple of days ago a fellow Brigitte Lin fan left a comment on one of my videos in my YouTube channel. He asked if I could post the video of a 1991 documentary of Brigitte Lin by Asia TV, "A Portrait of Lin Ching Hsia" in English subtitles. Well it was a challenge. I do not know of any English subtitled versions of this video. So I thought it would be nice if I could do one, and many non-Chinese speakers could watch and understand more about Brigitte. Here is the video: There is a longer version out there, [...]

Coming up next…

I haven’t updated this site for a while. Have been feeling kind of tired lately with the season changing, and I didn’t want to do a slipshod job. The last thing I did was the music video for “Center Stage”, a favorite movie of mine in the 1990s. I think it was quite well edited, even though I didn’t put in any special effects beyond some transitions. The painful part was actually not being able to include all the great scenes. But the story has to flow so…snip. Last night, I was browsing through some of my old “Favourite” videos […]

Center Stage《阮玲玉》 (1992) – Theme Song Music Video

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Movie Reviews, Personal Life
Center Stage (《阮玲玉》)is a movie released in 1992. Directed by Stanley Kwan, starring Maggie Cheung as 1930s actress Ruan Lingyu, Tony Leung Kar-fai, Ng Kei Wah, Chin Han, Carina Lau and Cecilia Yip. It was one of my favourite movies in the 1990s. I remember when it was shown on TV, it was in the late night and my family were all asleep. I stayed up to watch and was mesmerized by the cast's performance. The story of Ruan Lingyu was also very intriguing and sad. She passed away at the age of 24 by suicide after incessant harassment by [...]

Can You Write A Program? The Need for Visual Basic in the Office

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Learning Journey, Personal Life

Can you write a program? Is a question I get from my colleagues quite often. I guess if they are asking this, there could be two possibilities: there is a need for someone who can write a program, or I look like someone who can. There are so many blog posts out there about how a little bit of programming can lead to a major productivity boost. Use Python! Or JavaScript! Put it here, put it there, and you will shave hours off your work! It really sounds fantastic. Sure, a few simple lines of code may do a lot […]

Imagine What You Can Do In a Year: My Front End Web Development Journey

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Front End Web Development, Learning Journey, My Goals, Personal Life

A couple of days ago I read a blog post from Treehouse titled “Imagine What You Can Do In a Year” about a Treehouse student Ms. Ashley Harpp. It was a motivating read and an apt reminder that we can accomplish a lot by doing a little every day. My biggest problem is always trying to get to the end point quickly, then losing momentum either through loss of interest, or giving up after hitting an obstacle. Or getting overwhelmed with other life events, and then not picking up that initial goal again after the busy period is over. Or getting distracted […]

Front End Web Development with Team Treehouse

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Front End Web Development, Learning Journey, My Goals, Personal Life

Yesterday I subscribed to Team Treehouse (again) for their course on Front End Web Development. It is a basic subscription at about $25 USD a month. Had tried the Python course before, but it was a little too dry for me. After all, I have no programming experience, and I needed to visualize what I can do with the stuff that I’m learning. So my interest in Python sort of waned after going through a few exercises. Anyway, web development is different. At least, after putting in some HTML, I can see something appearing before my eyes, which is interesting. […]

Bilibili.com, Brigitte’s old movies and Mumblings, 19/9/2016

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Brigitte Lin Related, Personal Life
For the past couple of days I didn't put anything up. There was a public holiday, and I made full use of the long weekend to settle other personal stuff. I should've done those a long time ago, but kinda held them back due to my excitement about this site. Also I finally got past the crazy questions in order to sign up as a Level 1 member of Bilibili.com. It is a strange Chinese video sharing website that is dominated by anime and vocaloid stuff (what do you call this sub-culture?). But there are no shortages of good quality Brigitte [...]

Site Update 15/9/2016

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Brigitte Lin Related, Change Log, Personal Life

It’s been almost a week since my last update. Mostly I have been putting up drafts of sections under another main section, wherever inspiration hits me. Now the main page is up, and so are the following sections: About Brigitte Lin About this site My Blog (obviously) Main Page for Movies Sub page for 1992 to 1994 films Sometimes I thought I could fly through with the contents, but actually finding suitable pictures, editing them, compiling them, putting them up, adjusting, etc. could actually take a whole night. I think after I set up the sub pages for Brigitte’s films […]

WordPress for a Lazybum, Part 3

Disclaimer: NONE of the links here are affiliate links. They are just, y’ know, plain links. I’m writing based on my experiences setting up this site, and not promoting or putting down anyone’s services. Previously I fleshed out the structure of my site, did a video background for my landing page and set a static front page. That took me a whole week to figure out. Now I’m moving on to actually putting in content and styling my pages. I’m sure that would be more fun to do. As mentioned previously, my page composer of choice is Visual Composer by […]

Disclaimer: NONE of the links here are affiliate links. They are just, y’ know, plain links. I’m writing based on my experiences setting up this site, and not promoting or putting down anyone’s services. Continuing from where I have left off in Part 1…where I have installed Sydney theme and found out that it is bundled with SiteOrigin… There are many awesome things that one can do with the SiteOrigin page builder bundled with the Sydney theme, and NYC Tech Club even did a full-length video on how to set up a business website using Sydney theme and SiteOrigin from […]

WordPress for a Lazybum, Part 1

Disclaimer: NONE of the links here are affiliate links. They are just, y’ know, plain links. I’m writing based on my experiences setting up this site, and not promoting or putting down anyone’s services. Let’s just say setting up a WordPress site for a complete noob and a lazybum isn’t easy. A couple of weeks ago I had the idea of creating a website for my favourite actress Brigitte Lin. After all, I had amassed a whole bunch of pictures and information about her, why not share it? So I did a bit of research on how to set up a […]

Update 12/9/2016

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Brigitte Lin Related, Change Log

Setup as of 12/9/2016: Finally managed to set up a temporary landing page, that leads to a video front page, and then to the main page. Currently only the About Brigitte Lin page and About This Site page is up. Looking forward to set up the movie main page as soon as possible. It will then link to the individual movie pages. 100 movies! I wonder how long I will take to finish all. But the journey is more important than the end result, so I’m going to take it slow and steadily.
